Backstory

•Kryo, known formerly as the virtue Zaphariel in Heaven, is a demon who currently rules over the Ninth Circle of Hell. He has 30 legions of demons under his command, for a total of 180,000 demonic soldiers. His name is the Greek word for “cold.”

Thousands of years ago, back when the Heavenly Host was created, Zaphariel is said to be one of a special group of the First 10,000 Angels, which also includes all the archangels like Lucifer, Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, and other archangels. Zaphariel was put into the Order of Virtues, the fifth order in the heavenly hierarchy of the second triad, and he was the chief angel of serenity along with legions of other angels who shared the same position as he.

He was said to have watched as God created the universe, and created Heaven and Earth, and the Garden of Eden. He was one of the first angels to visit Eden when Adam and Lilith, and then later Eve were created. Zaphariel was assigned to be the Watcher leader originally, but he declined stating that Samyaza should be the leader. This also had the adverse effect of springing a bit of future defiance in the angel Lucifer.

During this time, two of his best friends he made were the angel Edziel of the lowest order of angels (the angels themselves), and the seraphim Myndephyllon of the order of seraphim. Many future members of the hierarchy of the Ninth Circle of Hell were also close friends of his in Heaven, such as Barboriel (Barbinias), Phelphinor (Albazan), Relkiel (Mazzoch), Opithion (Darvellis), and Vabris (Athra) among many others.

At some point, Lucifer began to instigate a revolt in Heaven, and managed to sway many of the angelic host to his side, including the aforementioned future members of the hierarchy of his future realm in Hell. By this point, Zaphariel had been growing weary of the way God and the other angels had been running things in Heaven, and had even had a heated disagreement with the ophanim Dremphannyion over the creation of a beast for man to tame. This coupled with other similar incidents, including an altercation with archangel Gabriel, prompted Zaphariel to join Lucifer’s cause and his desire to be above God and rule a domain of his own. Of course as the story goes, Lucifer and his angels fought in Heaven in a great battle that lasted many years, with Lucifer himself taking the form of a terrible dragon, but they were defeated and cast down to the earth, with many either losing their wings or their wings being very badly damaged in the Fall.

Now millions of fallen angels covered the earth and many transformed into hideous beasts that reflected the haughtiness of the former angels. Zaphariel lost his wings and his fiery form, and he became as like a man with horns and a tail. Upon seeing his appearance, Zaphariel let out a bellowing roar of anguish, as did the other angels that now covered the earth. The roar and cries of the angels that had covered the earth after falling was like that of a thousand thunders.

Lucifer renamed himself Satan, “the adversary” in Hebrew, and carved into the earth a vast underground chasm that became Hell itself. The Nine Circles were created by the first nine fallen angels to plunge into the new realm below the earth: Zoriel (Gurvunoch), Refnael (Fovos), Nashiel (Mascus), Hafashiel (Grovok), Mithriphior (Forbaneus), Sphendamiel (Pyra), Pythiel (Malmoroch), Bathior (Bostus), and Zaphariel (Kryo.)

Kryo, naming himself such so as to claim the circle of ice he had plunged down into, named himself the Greek word for “cold”, and took command of 30 legions of demons of which totaled to 180,000 demonic soldiers. He also created the hierarchy of his circle, which was the deepest:

Once Lucifer transformed into the serpent in the Garden of Eden and had claimed Lilith to transform her into his demonic bride, and in doing so having shamed mankind in the eyes of Heaven, Kryo along with the other rulers of the circles begin to plot their revenge against Heaven and humanity, God’s favorite creations. Kryo and his circle along with all of Hell were there when the first human civilizations began to flourish, and they were observant to all human history: all the accomplishments, wars, atrocities, and everything else that man had done.

He was also there to greet the Watchers after their fall with the Nephilim incidents and when the New Watchers led by Myndephyllon and Divine Intervention led by Edziel were appointed in Heaven to replace them. Azazel, the angel that was made a scapegoat despite not being the cause of the incident, was also imprisoned in a cell in Kryo’s circle that was marked just for him. When the time of Solomon’s testament came, he made sure to block off the path so Beelzebub and Ornias could not summon him forth. Myndephyllon later destroyed the demons Solomon had summoned a century later.

During this time, Kryo also visited Earth on occasion, with the last time being in 1815 after the Battle of Waterloo. He has not returned to Earth since, as he knew of the coming world wars and the atrocities of the 20th century, so he remained and decided not to intervene in the human conflicts.
